New Colorado Laws Now in Effect
Release Date: January 27, 2025

Several new laws took effect in Colorado this January, from stricter driving regulations to protections for delivery workers. Here's what you need to know.
Hands-Free Driving Only
Starting now, using your phone while driving could cost you. The new law bans holding phones or electronics while driving – even at stoplights. First-time violations mean a $75 fine and license points, though you can get it dismissed by buying hands-free gear. Emergency responders and commercial drivers are exempt.
Safer Car Seats Required
New regulations require children under 9 (previously 8) to use car seats. Kids under 2 and under 40 pounds must use rear-facing seats. After age 2, either rear or forward-facing seats are allowed.
Vehicle Firearm Storage
Got a gun in your car? It now needs to be in a locked hard-sided container out of view, or secured in the trunk or glove box. Non-handguns can use soft containers if the gun has a locking device. Fines run up to $100, with exemptions for antique firearms and law enforcement.
Cage-Free Eggs Mandated
Colorado joins nine other states requiring cage-free eggs. Hens must have at least 1 square foot of space and access to vertical areas. Small farms under 3,000 hens are exempt. Violations cost $1,000 per incident.
Better Protection for Delivery Workers
DoorDash, Uber Eats and similar companies must now be transparent about pay. They're required to disclose:
- Total customer charges
- Driver compensation
- Trip mileage
- Deactivation policies
Companies can't reduce driver pay based on tips and must provide an appeals process for deactivated drivers.
