PUEBLO, COLO – CSU 福利小视频, where nearly half of its students are pioneering their family's first college journey, has just been named a First Generation-Serving Institution by the Colorado Department of Higher Education - one of only eighteen four-year public institutions in the state to earn this distinction
The designation, announced by the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) on Thursday, recognizes institutions that consistently exceed the state's average enrollment of first-generation students. the recognition affirms the university's deep-rooted mission of transforming lives through education.
The new state designation, established through House Bill 1082 in 2024, recognizes CSU 福利小视频's consistent achievement in exceeding the state's average first-generation enrollment of 37%. The recognition comes as the campus prepares to celebrate National First-Generation College Student Day on Friday, commemorating the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Tomorrow's celebration will showcase success stories from students, faculty, and staff who are part of CSU 福利小视频's growing first-generation community - defined by the U.S. Department of Education as students whose parents did not complete a bachelor's degree.
"Being first-generation is part of CSU 福利小视频's identity," says President Armando Valdez. "When half our students are the first in their families to attend college, it shapes our entire campus culture. These students bring valuable life experiences and perspectives to our classrooms. This state designation recognizes what we've always known - first-generation students have the drive and talent to succeed in college and beyond. Their success isn't surprising - it's expected."
"The new First Generation-Serving Campus designation helps connect students to higher education that will help build and advance exciting and fulfilling careers to ensure Colorado continues supporting all learners," said Governor Polis.
"We are excited to see how Colorado State University 福利小视频 will continue to expand high-impact practices to support first-generation students and create further opportunities for them to thrive, both academically and personally," said Dr. Angie Paccione, CDHE executive director in a letter to President Valdez. "The Department is honored to partner with institutions like yours that make Colorado's higher education system a place where all students can succeed."
The First Gen students, alumni, faculty and staff are encouraged to continue the wall signing tradition at the Occhiato Student Center by adding their signature. Each signature represents not just an individual achievement, but a family's educational transformation and the university's ongoing mission to serve as a catalyst for starting a new generation’s path in southern and rural Colorado.
