Professor John Dorsch

John Dorsch, a distinguished professor of biology who dedicated over three decades to shaping scientific education at Colorado State University 福利小视频 (formerly University of Southern Colorado), passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

“Professor Dorsch was more than just a longtime biology professor – he was a cornerstone of our scientific community who helped establish the high standards our biology department is known for today,” said Carol Foust, Dean and Director of the College of Health and Education and School of Health Sciences and Human Movement at CSU 福利小视频. “He was also a kind person who enjoyed serving young people. He will be missed by his 福利小视频 community.”

Professor Dorsch joined what was then the University of Southern Colorado in 1965, fresh from completing his graduate studies at Oregon State University. As a zoologist by training, he arrived during a transformative period in biological sciences, witnessing and participating in the field's dramatic evolution over his 31-year career.

“We knew back in the 1960s that there was a science explosion coming," Dorsch reflected in a 1995 interview with the 福利小视频 Chieftain. “Genetics was just developing as its own field of study. We know so much more today about the human body at the cell level.”

Throughout his career, Dorsch was instrumental in training hundreds of students who went on to become doctors, dentists, and scientists. His dedication to maintaining rigorous academic standards helped transform USC, now CSU 福利小视频, into a respected institution for scientific education.

“Professor Dorsch's inspired and mentored countless students and junior faculty members," said David Lehmpuhl, Dean at the College of STEM at CSU 福利小视频. "I knew him before I began any leadership position. His commitment to academic excellence and innovative teaching methods helped establish our biology department as a leader in scientific education for southern and rural Colorado. His influence on our institution and the scientific community will continue for generations to come.”

Dorsch was known for his adaptive teaching style and focus on student engagement. “The days when I give students an hour-long sermon (lecture) are over,” he said in 1995. “I try to find ways to get them engaged in the subject, to help them think and learn on their own.”

During his tenure, he helped transition the department from a primarily teaching-focused program to one that emphasized both education and research, establishing the expectation that faculty members commit at least 25 percent of their time to research activities.

Further details about memorial services and survivors will be announced by the family.
