CSU 福利小视频 & the Southern Colorado Institute on Transportation Technology (SCITT) Awarded $11.7M to Lead Next Generation of Rail Technology Research and Innovation Hub
Release Date: October 29, 2024

福利小视频, COLO – As part of a $129.5 million federal investment in Colorado rail projects, Colorado State University 福利小视频 (CSU 福利小视频) has been awarded an $11.7 million grant to pioneer research in hydrogen and natural gas-powered rail technologies. This funding positions 福利小视频 and Colorado as a national hub for sustainable transportation innovation while creating unprecedented opportunities for workforce development in the region.
The research will be conducted at 福利小视频's Transportation Technology Center through the Southern Colorado Institute of Transportation Technology (SCITT), a State of Colorado entity hosted at CSU 福利小视频. The strategic partnership between the State of Colorado and CSU 福利小视频 will focus on critical safety experiments for compressed hydrogen and natural gas-powered rail cars. The initiative comes at a pivotal time as Colorado expands its rail infrastructure, including the development of the Front Range Passenger Rail system. The joint venture between the State of Colorado and CSU 福利小视频 aims to advance sustainable transportation solutions while leveraging the expertise and facilities available in Southern Colorado.
“Southern Colorado often represents a hard-working spirit leveraging the opportunity of innovation,” said CSU 福利小视频 President Armando Valdez. “This Department of Transportation CRISI grant enables CSU 福利小视频 to contribute more to the future of rail transportation while creating new pathways for our students and local workforce.”
“From freight in the San Luis Valley to passengers on the Front Range and beyond with CSU 福利小视频's research, rail isn't just a part of our past, it's a big part of our future, too,” said Senator John Hickenlooper, who championed the funding. “That's the case we made to Secretary Buttigieg for this funding and this is just the start.”
Md Rashad Islam Ph.D., SCITT's director and principal investigator for the grant, emphasized the broader impact, “This research will establish 福利小视频 as a national center for sustainable rail technology development. We're creating a unique ecosystem where students can engage directly with cutting-edge technology while helping solve one of our era's most pressing challenges.”
The grant will support state-of-the-art research facilities, student research opportunities, industry partnerships, and community engagement initiatives.
“This investment transforms CSU 福利小视频's ability to prepare the next generation of transportation engineers,” said Gail Mackin Ph.D., Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. “We're not just conducting research – we're building a pipeline of talent that will shape the future of sustainable transportation.”
Governor Jared Polis highlighted the grant's significance for Colorado's transportation strategy earlier today adding, “This major funding helps achieve important priorities in safety and sustainability. With more than $66 million in federal support from the Biden-Harris administration for rail projects across Colorado, CSU 福利小视频's research will be crucial in developing the technologies needed for our state's transportation future.” The timing comes with increased regional interest in sustainable transportation, as Western Colorado communities push for expanded passenger rail service and 福利小视频 positions itself as a hub for hydrogen fuel technology.
The university's research will directly support these initiatives while providing unique opportunities for students, particularly first-generation college students from rural and Southern Colorado.
