Q: How did you get involved in buying an arena football team?

A: I own a law firm in Gillette, Wyoming, and that's my primary day job. I got into it (the Arena Football League) by buying a franchise in Gillette, thinking it'd be a great way of advertising for the law firm and increasing revenue. It did well, so when an opportunity came up to buy a neighboring franchise in Billings, Montana, we decided to go for it. We could share resources and create dual revenue streams while making operations more efficient.

Q: The league faced some challenges in 2024. How did you approach the decision to continue or disband?

A: Things didn't go sideways with the league until we joined this new league in 2024. The other owners with sustainable franchises and I met to decide how to move things forward to finish the 2024 season. As a trial attorney, I'm used to new things coming up all the time and being able to figure it out. We always had contingency plans in place for different situations, so we were prepared to handle it.

Q: What advice would you give to somebody struggling in their business?

A: First off, you got to get rid of your ego. You need to find yourself around people that can give you the right advice to move forward. Trust those people and don't micromanage. Communication is key – lay out the right game plan so everyone's on the same page. You also need to know when to give up or reset. Don't take everything one step at a time, but be realistic and practical. Put emotions aside as much as possible and try to make the best decision based on the facts.

Q: What would you say to a first-generation college student who's struggling halfway through their degree?

A: The first thing you got to do is find the right mentors in college and trust your professors. Get involved on campus – studies show that the more engaged you are, the more likely you are to graduate. Stay focused and do what you need to do. If it means you have to have a job, get a job and go to night classes. When you look at it, it's a pure financial decision. Statistically, you're going to make about $1.5 million more over a lifetime with a BA compared to not having a bachelor's degree. So, at the very end, it's an easy financial decision to make to get the four-year degree because there are a lot more doors open with it than without it.
