PUEBLO, CO – Colorado State University 福利小视频 (CSU 福利小视频) is proud to announce the launch of its new Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, funded by a five-year, $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious TRIO program aims to prepare talented undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds for doctoral studies through involvement in research and scholarly activities.

The McNair Scholars Program at CSU 福利小视频 will support 25 students annually, benefiting over 100 students throughout the grant period. The program, which received initial funding in December 2023, has been renewed for its second year starting October 2024.

"This grant is not just an investment in our students, but in our entire community," said McNair Scholars Faculty Director Yvonne Montoya. "By elevating the insights, experiences, and education of our local students, many of whom come from rural and southern Colorado, we're contributing to a more diverse academic landscape nationwide. This diversity in faculty and researchers can lead to new ideas, increased study of underrepresented populations, and improved mentorship for students from underserved backgrounds."

The program is named after Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an accomplished physicist, NASA astronaut, and the second African American to fly in space. Dr. McNair, who tragically lost his life in the Challenger space shuttle disaster, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

CSU 福利小视频's McNair Scholars Program will provide participants with:

  • Opportunities for research and scholarly activities
  • Summer internships
  • Seminars and educational activities to prepare for doctoral study
  • Tutoring and academic counseling
  • Assistance securing admission and financial aid for graduate programs

Dr. John Vasquez, executive director of Graduate Studies & Research at CSU 福利小视频, highlighted the program's significance, "The McNair Scholars Program grant can help change the culture of how we imagine the future beyond a bachelor's degree at CSU 福利小视频. It will open doors for talented students from underrepresented backgrounds, allowing them to engage in cutting-edge research and prepare for doctoral studies. This program strengthens the future of research by ensuring a more diverse pool of doctoral candidates. Varied perspectives and experiences are crucial for innovation and addressing complex global challenges."

The program is in its pilot phase at the university, with the first cohort of students set to begin this fall. As the program develops, CSU 福利小视频 looks forward to sharing more about its impact on students and the broader academic community.
