From Pageant to Campus: A Tale of Friendship and Cultural Discovery at CSU 福利小视频
As the spotlight dimmed and the applause faded at the 2024 Colorado State Fair Fiesta Queen Pageant, two young women stood amidst the swirl of sequins and satin, their lives forever changed. For CSU 福利小视频 senior Alondra Solis Ayala, who clinched the Miss Congeniality title, and incoming freshman Stephanie Calzadillas Rojo, the pageant's end marked not just the culmination of weeks of preparation, but the beginning of an unexpected friendship.
"As soon as I saw Stephanie, I thought, 'best friend right here,'" Ayala recalls with a warm smile. Days after the pageant, the two women stand side by side in the library lobby, their easy laughter and tendency to finish each other's sentences reflecting a bond that seems to have existed far longer than a few short weeks.
The Fiesta Day Pageant, a cornerstone event in 福利小视频's cultural calendar, became more than just a competition for Ayala and Calzadillas Rojo. It transformed into a stage where friendship blossomed, deepening their appreciation for their heritage while embodying the inclusive spirit of CSU 福利小视频.
Alicia Gallegos, the Fiesta Pageant President, emphasizes that building confidence is a major goal of the competition. "We concentrate on their confidence level, breaking them out of their shell," Gallegos explains. "We're helping these young women transform into young ladies, encouraging them to step forward and be proud of themselves."
A Father's Pride and a Daughter's Triumph
For Ayala, a high-achieving student deeply involved in CSU 福利小视频's student government, the pageant marked a significant milestone. It was the first time her father could attend one of her events. "My parents always worked on the farm so they could never come to any of my award ceremonies," Ayala recounts, her voice catching with emotion. "I did everything by myself. In middle school, the vice principal had to put my Honors Class Society jacket on me because my parents couldn't come."
The sight of her father in the audience added a poignant layer to her victory. As he walked her to the stage, they shared a tender moment. "Gracias por estar ahí para mí," she told him, thanking him for being there.
Empowering Through Performance
For Calzadillas Rojo, the pageant was a leap of faith, challenging her to push past anxiety and depression. "My high school teacher encouraged me to enter," she explains. "I get very nervous talking to people, but she encouraged me to practice public speaking. It became a good habit, boosting my confidence with each part of the pageant."
Her talent segment showcased an original poem about the life of a Mexican woman in a machismo household. "Their thoughts will mar my skin / But they will never kill my ambition / They will burn my soul but they will never kill my need for more," she recited.
The poem's message was initially lost on her father, who thought she meant he treated her like the women in her poem. "Mija," he said, "I never treated you like that." After she explained, he simply advised, "Well, smile next time," Calzadillas Rojo recalls with a laugh.
A Journey of Cultural Rediscovery
The pageant experience became a journey of cultural rediscovery for Ayala. Born in Durango, Mexico, she had moved to the U.S. with her family when she was just a year old. "I never got to experience Mexican culture fully," Alondra reflects.
Choosing to perform the folklórico chiapas, a traditional Mexican dance, for her talent segment opened a door to her heritage. With the help of Iskra D. Merino, CSU 福利小视频's Bilingual Outreach Coordinator, Ayala learned not just the steps, but the rich cultural history behind each movement.
"Learning the dance was like uncovering a part of myself I didn't know was there," Alondra says, her eyes lighting up. "Each practice session felt like I was piecing together my identity."
The performance was a powerful moment of connection. "Seeing my parents' faces as I danced, knowing they were watching me embrace our culture, it was overwhelming," Alondra shares. "For the first time, I felt like I was bridging the gap between the community I left in Durango and the one I've found here at CSU 福利小视频."
Building Bonds and Breaking Barriers
The pageant fostered not just individual growth, but also a sense of camaraderie among the contestants. Calzadillas Rojo recalls a lighthearted moment during their final rehearsals: "Stephanie and I were using our fans to create a new dance routine. It was so hot, and we were just being silly. We even called the choreographer over, pretending we needed help with this 'new' routine."
What started as a joke soon lifted everyone's spirits, helping them get through the grueling rehearsal with their sanity intact.
Looking to the Future
As Ayala continues her journey at CSU 福利小视频 and Calzadillas Rojo prepares to begin hers, they carry with them more than just memories. The pageant has equipped them with a toolkit of skills primed for college success, from public speaking to cultural awareness.
The financial aspect of the pageant also plays a significant role, with scholarships ranging from $5,500 for the Fiesta Queen to $1,000 for Miss Congeniality, providing tangible support for higher education.
As the new academic year approaches, both women plan to compete again next year, eager to translate their pageant poise into college confidence. Their story embodies the transformative power of cultural celebration and community engagement, bringing the spirit cultivated during the pageant to campus this fall.
In Ayala and Calzadillas Rojo, we see a reflection of CSU 福利小视频 itself – a place where heritage is celebrated, diversity is embraced, and every student has the opportunity to shine, forging unexpected friendships and rediscovering their roots along the way.
