PUEBLO -- As part of Hispanic Heritage Month activities, the Fray Angelico Chavez Chapter of Genealogy Society of Hispanic American and Chicano Studies at Colorado State University-福利小视频 will provide two presentations on genealogical research and DNA. The first will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 Library and Academic Resources Center (LARC) 108 and the second at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 in LARC 109. The first event will begin with a reception of light refreshments at 5:30 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
The Oct. 9 presentation will focus on DNA and genealogy for beginners by anthropological genetic genealogist and history researcher Angel de Cervantes. The Oct. 10 session will focus on Christopher Columbus’ DNA. The presentation is part of a grant that FACC/ GSHA Fray Angelico Chavez Chapter /Genealogy Society of Hispanic American received from the Duran Youth initiative. The grant helps inform younger generations about Hispanic Genealogy and promote research in Hispanic history, culture, and genealogy.
Cervantes has conducted historical and genealogical research in the Archivos of Chihuahua, Colima, Durango, Jalisco, and Zacatecas, Mexico. In addition, he has worked at the New Mexico State Archives in Santa Fe, NM. In 2004, he pioneered the study of Anthropological Genetic Genealogy with the creation of the New Mexico DNA Project. The New Mexico DNA Project is the second largest Hispanic DNA database on record with more than 2,200 DNA samples.
In 2006 and 2014, Cervantes participated in PBS specials that discussed Anthropological Genetic Genealogy through the DNA of the Founding Families of the Spanish New Mexico Colony. He also has been a key lecturer and speaker on the study of Anthropological Genetic Genealogy for various historical and genealogical organizations in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico. He teaches Advanced Placement History at Albuquerque High School and is an instructor at the University of New Mexico Continuing Education program on the subject of Anthropological Genetic History.
